Pro tips
- Use room-temperature butter so it spreads easily without tearing the bread.
- For extra crunch, bake the buttered bread for 5 minutes before adding the cheese.
- Add a pinch of chilli flakes to the butter for a gentle kick.
- Leftover garlic bread reheats well in a hot oven for 5 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make cheesy garlic bread ahead of time?
Yes. Butter the bread and add the cheese, then cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Bake straight from the fridge, adding 2 to 3 extra minutes.
What cheese works best for garlic bread?
Mozzarella melts beautifully and stretches well, while Parmesan adds a salty, savoury depth. Cheddar or provolone are good alternatives.
Can I use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic?
You can, but fresh garlic gives a much richer flavour. Use 1 teaspoon of garlic powder in place of 4 fresh cloves.
How do I keep garlic bread crispy?
Serve it straight from the oven and avoid covering it with foil, which traps steam and softens the crust.
